Job Overview:

Directs and manages all facets of quartz and glass optical manufacturing including but not limited to budgeting, work flow, and training.

 

 

Requires:

Education/Experience:

Bachelors Degree (B. A.) or equivalent; or ten years manufacturing experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.  At least three years experience in glass and quartz fabrication.

Supervisory experience

·         5 years experience supervising 10 or more employees

Technical Skills:

  • Experience in machining glass and fused silica and/or other brittle materials
    • Optical lens fabrication equipment
    • Planar grinding and polishing using Double Sided Machines, continuous polishers and spindle machines including, Speedfam, Lapmaster or similar grinding and polishing equipment
    • Grinding and polishing optical flats, prisms and radii
    • Ultrasonic cleaning machines
  • Working knowledge of measurement methodologies like manual dimensional, Automated Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM), Interferometers (ZYGO), Autocollimators, optical comparators, microscopes and optical profilometers.

Communication skills:  Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Some ability to communicate in Spanish a plus.

Decision making:  Must be able to make decisions on processes, machinery acquisitions etc.

Other competencies or skills:  Must be able to work more than 40 hours per week as needed, ability to work in teams and deal with high stress and tight deadlines. Must be mechanically and technically detailed in all capacities.

Preference:  Experience with Solid Works 3D CAD Design Software is highly desired.

Duties and Responsibilities

Review new sales requirements for products and stock products. Determine process (including tooling and fixturing), and draft drawings. Schedule work orders or manage work flow.  Establishes production priorities for products in keeping with effective operations and cost factors.

Confers with management personnel to establish production and quality control standards, develop budget and cost controls, and to obtain data regarding types, quantities, specifications, and delivery dates of products ordered.

Coordinates production activities with procurement, maintenance, and quality control activities to obtain optimum production and utilization of human resources, machines, and equipment.

Reviews and analyzes production, quality control, maintenance, and operational reports to determine causes of nonconformity with product specifications, and operating or production problems.

Develops and implements operating methods and procedures designed to eliminate operating problems and improve product quality.

Revises production schedules and priorities as result of equipment failure or operating problems.

Consults with engineering personnel relative to modification of machines and equipment in order to improve production and quality of products.

Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of all production employees.  Directly supervises 10+ employees.  Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

 

General

Language Skills :                                            

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Mathematical Skills :                                                   

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability :                                                      

Ability to define problems, collects data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Computer Skills :                                            

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of CAD CAM Design software; Internet software; Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.  Must be competent and comfortable with using computers.
